Why Llamas?

Llamas are perfect livestock for Australian conditions. Their camel-like attributes make them intelligent, hardy, economical and very gentle on the landscape. Their unique beauty makes them utterly captivating

Their sweet natures make them easy to deal with and safe around visitors, from the very young to the very old.

Their serenity and elegance are soothing to the soul and their sense of fun an endless source of entertainment for their lucky carers.

As an adjunct to the keeping of smaller livestock, they can be invaluable, as their sense of "family" makes them very protective against predators.

Studies have shown llamas to be as effective as stock-guarding dogs in reducing lamb, kid or fawn losses. In addition, the llama lifespan is about twice that of dogs and they graze the same pastures as their charges.

Llama fleece is wonderfully warm, soft and lightweight and has a texture somewhat like a cross between mohair and angora. It is beloved of handspinners, comes in an amazing range of natural colours from true blue-black to snowy white and can be strong enough for rugs or fine enough for baby clothes.

Llamas are easily trained to carry anything from camping gear to children and are extremely sure-footed. They pull carts alone or in pairs and are readily transported in small floats, trailers or vans. They've even been transported by gondola en route to the top of a Swiss mountain!
